Reports from the University of Iowa were one of the first to show that Viagra could reduce the effects of fatigue experienced by people suffering from Muscular dystrophy.
Using dystrophic mice models, the study revealed that Viagra when used has been discovered to ease exercise induced-fatigue in the rodents. The study was aimed at discovering the relationship between the type of fatigue inherently experienced by individuals suffering from Muscular dystrophy (MD) and the kind after the same set of people engage in exercise.
Muscular dystrophy is a genetic hereditary disease that results in progressive muscle weakness. People who suffer from this condition become weaker as they get older at a much faster rate.
However if the results of the study are anything to go by there some relief for this condition can be found with the use of muscle relaxants such as Viagra.
Professor Kevin Campbell, the head of molecular physiology and biophysics department in the university announced that the results of the “… research suggests that there probably are many different neuromuscular conditions where fatigue could be treated by targeting this newly discovered pathway,”
The mice which were used also suffered from the same genetic disease. In the course of the study, researchers discovered that if the enzyme neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) was not found to be present at its normal location on the muscle membrane, then blood vessels that handled the supply of blood to active muscles would fail to relax normally thereby causing the animals to experience post-exercise fatigue.
The roles of the enzyme NNOS was discovered during the observation of mice suffering from muscular dystrophy after engaging in a mild exercise. It was found to be vastly similar to those experienced by humans who suffer from the same disease and have engaged in a short period of exercise—i.e. walking.
As the co-author of the study Yvonne Kobayashi explained in a university press release “The mice without nNOS have normal muscles and can exercise quite well, but after just mild exercise, we found that they had the intense fatigue response.
The signaling pathway probably maintains blood flow into the muscle during exercise and keeps the blood flow going after exercise. But when nNOS is missing or out of place, this pathway breaks down,”

This in turn causes the increased stimulated production of cGMP. This action of Viagra mimics that of the enzyme nNOS which is missing in humans suffering from Muscular dystrophy. They are thus able to recover from their conditions at a much faster rate
