Viagra meets the female Viagra

Only 10 years ago, the world was stunned with the news that the pharmaceutical company Pfizer has succesfully manufactured the world’s first male anti impotent tablet. Sales of Viagra soared almost immediately. In the first 10 months alone it was reported that more than $700 million worth of Viagra pills were sold to male consumers alone. As these figures increased, it became more apparent that a more lucrative enterprise could be developed if a similar treatment could be found for addressing the female sexuality.

Pfizer, riding on the success of Viagra attempted to replicate a similar effect in tested females. But after three years, they had to admit that their efforts were yielding mostly less than effective results. More importantly, scientist involved in the test surmised that the secret to finding a female sexual drug—the female Viagra as it was called, lay more in addressing the mental psyche of a woman than it did wih their physical traits. As it turns out, they were completely right.

Recent reports indicate that a German biotech Boehringer Ingelheim, is well on its way to announcing the worlds first female sexual pill. Designed to address the felmale sexual side the pill is reported to be able to “reawaken female desire by blunting their inhibitions”. This pill (yet unnamed) is said to be able to achieve this by addressing the core areas in the female brain—a process that increases the level of dopamine.

If the pills are a success, economics estimate that as much as $2 billion can be generated in the first year alone. This is because far more women are affected by sexual problems than the men. For example, although 1 in 30 men are found to experience a reduced sex drive, 1 in 10 women instead are found to be affected by this condition. Much of this is linked to the mechanism behind the arousal for both sexes. The male erection can easily be triggered in relation to physical stimulation, but arousal in women is a more complicated psychological process. Arousal does not automatically result in a desire to have sex.

It will be recalled that Viagra abandoned research into seeking a female sexual drug early last year. The German company is hoping to soon begin production of the drug after tests and approvals from the FDA are completed.

Viagra tablets are designed to be taken by men who are unable to have normal erections. The age range in this regard is found to be 18 and above—18 being the legal age at which men are permitted to have sex. However, because impotency is more prevalent amongst over the age of 45, most of the men who use Viagra pills are found to be within this bracket. Viagra tablets have been prescribed more than half a million times since its release and is reportedly sold at a rate of 6 every second. Most countries, in selling Viagra, insist that the tablets be sold with a prescription. This is aimed at ensuring that the tablets are not misused by naïve or reckless citizens.

Since its release, Viagra pills have since been joined by an ever widening pool of generic drugs which seek to mimic its actions whilst riding on the success of its fame. People are therefore urged to be cautious when buying their tablets. Tablets that are tampered or fake should be avoided particularly when online.
