This in turn causes an increase in the flow of blood found within the penis. As more blood comes in, the Corpora Cavernosa—the tissue which is responsible for the erection effect, absorbs most of the blood and then expands.

The discovery of phentolamine signified a major breakthrough. Many men began to rely on this method for the treatment of their ED. It was not uncommon for men to walk around with shots of phentolamine close by.
