Viagra: A look at counterfeiting
If you think the talk of fake erectile dysfunction drugs being sold is mostly false then think again. The result of a study conducted by pharmaceutical giants—one of which is Pfizer clearly shows otherwise.
In a bid to test the credibility of the online shopping market, packages of each of the three most common ED drugs—Viagra, Cialis and Levitra were ordered online from about 60 Japanese speaking online sites based in either Japan or Thailand. The delivered packages were then tested for originality.
The results of the study revealed that out of 184 drugs which were ordered, 102 of them were found to be fake. This signifies as much as 55% of the total drugs ordered. A further division of the statistic shows that 70% of the drugs ordered from Thailand were fake as opposed to 40% from Japan. This result, whilst shocking was in many ways hardly unexpected.
Online sales of ED drugs have in recent times become the default means of buying these pills. Much of its success has been attributed to its many benefits. For instance online stores provide a more convenient way of buying Viagra pills.
They can easily be reached at any time of the day in a multitude of locations via the web. Online pharmacies also provide a welcomed screen of anonymity. Men who do not wish for their condition to become public knowledge are able to place orders for their Viagra tablets online without fear of their identity being discovered.
Yet another reason behind the public appeal for Viagra tablets lies in its price. Pills that are sold online are found to be more affordable than others. People are thus able to buy Cheap Viagra pills online.
The problem however with online pharmacies is the growing threat of counterfeiting. Many online pharmacies, purporting to sell Viagra tablets, instead actually sell fake substitiutes. This can result in dangerous and in some instances, life threatening results.
In the case of the study conducted, some of the discovered counterfeits were found to contain more than twice the allowed amount of the pharmaceutical compound. Impurities are also sometimes added to these fake tablets.
In 2008 for example, a counterfeit drug which was sold in Singapore was found to contain medications which was intended to induce a reduction of blood sugar. Many people who came to use this drug suffered symptoms of lethargy and two known people died from its use.
The governments of most of the Asian nations have been working hard towards curbing this growing threat and the risk it poses to citizens in Asia and around the world. In discussing the situation and the result of the study, Pfizer, announcing through a spokes person, said
“It’s very difficult to distinguish which import drugs are safe to use,It’s impossible to guarantee there will be no harm to a person’s health, and we encourage people to obtain prescriptions from creditable medical institutions or stores.”
Viagra tablets are also sold outside the continent of Asia. A viable market, for instance is found in Europe, with emphasis on the United Kingdom. Viagra pills can be bought from online UK pharmacies.
Viagra tablets are blue in color and produced by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Alongside the engrave name of Pfizer, the dosages of the pill—an optional 25mg, 50mg or 100mg depending on the contents—are also found engraved on each pill.
