For 8 years, Pfizer, the pharmaceutical giant has been trying to achieve some form of success with the use of Viagra on women. The results of the test have served as a huge blow to the ambitions of Pfizer. With cases of female sexual dysfunction in more abundance than those of males, Pfizer recognized the opportunity that would have been provided with similar success. The current disappointment is however being treated lightly. As Karen Katen, president of Pfizer Global Pharmaceuticals right put it, sometimes in the world of science “….we make substantial financial investments, marshal the talents of our best scientists and clinicians and spend years studying potential treatments only to find that they do not meet the requirements for regulatory approval.”

However this is not an indication that research into the subject will cease. Pfizer fully intends on continuing the search of the first female dysfunction pill. The viability of Viagra as such a solution has been permanently closed.

The research on Viagra and its effect on women did result in some positive notes. For instance it has been shown that Viagra is able to negate the effects of dysfunction in cases where such conditions are induced by the taking of drugs such as anti depressants. However its adaption as a female sexual drug is fundamentally flawed.

As Mitra Boolel, head of Pfizer’s sex research team explains, women experience a much larger disconnect between arousal and the need to have sex. Mitra explains that “….this disconnect does not exist in men. Men consistently get erections in the presence of naked women and want to have sex. With women, things depend on a myriad of factors.”

Viagra was released almost a decade ago. Thanks to it ability to suppress an enzyme, many men are once again able to have normal erections. Viagra triggers an increased flow of blood into the penile areas thereby resulting in the effects of an erection.
